WARD I CITY COUNCIL VACANCY

The City of Bisbee has a vacant position on the City Council created by the resignation of Mr. William “Jack” Porter, Ward I, and is soliciting letters of interest from qualified electors of Ward I who wish to fill the remainder of Mr. Porter's term. This term will end at the first Regular Meeting in December, 2008. 

The letter of interest should contain the following information:

  • The applicant's name, address and telephone number;
  • A statement of what the applicant considers to be their qualifications for serving on the City Council;
  • Reasons why they would like to serve on the City Council; and,
  • A statement attesting that they are a qualified elector residing within the City of Bisbee and within Ward I for one year prior to the date of appointment.

The City Clerk will accept the letters of interest and any supporting materials for appointment to the vacant Council position until 5:00 PM on Friday, May 9, 2008.

FREEPORT MCMORAN MITIGATION ORDER

In December, 2007, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) issued a Consent Order to Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc. for the mitigation of the sulfate plume located between Bisbee and Naco.  Freeport has issued a Work Plan to address this Consent Order, and has quarterly meetings with a Community Advisory Group to give updates on their progress.  All of the documents related to the Consent Order are public documents, and can be accessed at the Copper Queen Library, or by the following link;

The Community Advisory Group meets on a quarterly basis, and the next meeting will be July 29, 2008 at 1:00 PM at the Convention Center, 2 nd Floor.

BISBEE FIRE DEPARTMENT CENTENIAL CELEBRATION

The Bisbee Fire Department is currently planning its Centennial Celebration and they need your help! Sponsors and vendors are requested for this two day event to take place Friday, May 9 th and Saturday May 10 th , 2008. Our department is the Oldest Paid, Full-Time Fire department in the State of Arizona . The schedule of events include a private dinner and dance at the Turquoise Valley Golf Course on Friday. Saturday is a family event to include a parade, food, muster, car and motorcycle show, horseshoe tournament, and fireworks in Warren at Vista Park . INTERNATIONAL GOLF JAM - KICKOFF TO SUMMER YOUTH PROGRAMS

The 2008 International Golf Jam will take place at the Turquoise Valley Golf Course on Friday, May 30 th from 3:30 to 7:30 PM for 4 th through 12 th graders. The schedule includes free golf, golf instruction, food, access to positive community organizations, and entertainment for hundreds of children and their family members from Bisbee and Naco as well as our greater surrounding area of Agua Prieta, through Douglas, up north to Elfrida, Pearce, over to Tombstone , Benson, Sierra Vista , and from as far away as Cananea. This is also an opportunity to find out what is available for kids in the Bisbee community. For more information, please call 520-432-3091.

ADOPT-A-PARK PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT

The City of Bisbee has recently updated its Adopt-A-Park Program and is currently seeking volunteers who would like to participate. Adopt-A-Park is a citywide volunteer program that recruits and trains residents to assist in the general care and maintenance of neighborhood parks. Volunteers may include individuals, senior citizens, youth groups, schools, scouts, church groups, and businesses. REWARD FUND ESTABLISHED TO FIGHT GRAFFITI IN BISBEE

The City of Bisbee has been asked to establish a reward fund for the arrest and conviction of any person caught applying graffiti to public or private property in Bisbee. City Manager Steve Pauken said “I have been told that there are residents who would contribute their funds to establish this reward fund.” Therefore, any person who wishes to donate to a graffiti reward fund may do so by sending their donation to the City of Bisbee, attention City Manager's office. If this effort is successful, staff will recommend a matching amount from the General Fund at a future date. Please contact the Graffiti Hotline at 432-6050 to report tagging.
